Top Tips for Using Google Analytics

Google Analytics is a free analytics package that generates detailed statistics about visitors to your website. With Google Analytics you can see how many people are visiting your website, where they are coming from and what they are doing when they visit your site. Last month Google launched a new version of the system with additional features including an easier to use interface and further integration with Google AdWords.
Here are some tips for getting the most from Google Analytics
1. Tag All Your Pages - Tag all off your pages using the Google Analytics tracking code. Many Analytics users do not add the code to all of the pages on their website which means they are losing valuable information on visitor activity. There are tools available which will scan your site to verify that the Google Analytics code is on each page of your site. Check out http://www.sitescanga.com
2. Tag Other Campaigns - Using the Google Analytics link-tagging tool, you can tag other campaigns such as Yahoo and MSN sponsored listings, banner ads and email marketing campaigns. You can then look at what visitors from these ads are getting up to on your site and which campaigns are adding the most value.
3. Set up Funnels - The funnel option is one of the best features on Analytics and gives you the option to track defined movements on your website. These defined movements could be the stages of purchasing a product or signing up for a newsletter. The funnels allow you to see at what stages people are dropping off from completing the process. This is valuable information and you can use it to refine pages and purchasing processes on your website.
4. Secure Your Pages - If you have secure pages on your website, don't forget to generate the secure version of the Google Analytics code for these pages. When setting up your Google Analytics account give the URL for the secure pages as https:// and not http://.
5. Track E-Commerce Revenue - Analytics allows you to set a value in monetary terms for a conversion on your site. If your visitors from MSN live are twice as likely to buy your product then you can bid more in Microsoft AdCenter than you do in Google AdWords. Similarly, if some keywords earn you more money than other keywords you can bid higher for these in all your sponsored listings.
6. Check Out Support - Google Anlaytics has an excellent support site at www.google.com/support/analytics. The information at this website provides straightforward answers to any implementation or user issues that you may have.
Google Analytics is a great free tool than can help you achieve your online business objectives. Analyse the data and use the information to identify where you are getting the best value traffic from, where individuals are leaving your shopping cart and which online marketing campaigns are working for you.
